Peeta glanced around his house packing a small bag. He had been preparing for this small trip for about a week. Taking rolls here and there wrapping them in cloth for safekeeping. It was mostly the scraps that his own family didn’t use or no one bought. They had to get rid of the food some how instead of throwing it away he was going to take it with him. Of course there was a bit more than he could finish by himself. So if Damien would actually accept his gesture he’d share or give him the rest for his family.
Hopefully he wouldn’t get caught carrying such food around. Peeta knew the peacekeepers in his district were most relaxed but had no idea how others were in different places. Peeta never had first hand experience with dealing food to peacekeepers usually his mother would sit there. Gawking over how they made district twelve the safest of all the districts. Peeta would be almost sick to his stomach because some of them had hurt people from the seam. Or penalized them for something so minor it should have been over looked. It was rare that they did but around reaping time it was no joke.
Finding himself down stairs he saw his brother eyeing him. Nodding they didn’t exchange words but he did notice a fresh bruise on his face. Peeta didn’t say anything about it. By this time they both knew but no on said a peep about it. Walking out the house he threw the bag over his shoulder. The small map was stuffed in to his pocket just in case someone wanted to search his bag. Unlikely because he was a Merchant child peacekeepers never question people with more money. How could a kid like that every do something wrong? Grinning to no one he kept walking along like nothing was happening. He tried to wear his most used clothes so he’d blend in but there was no guarantee that he’d blend in District Ten. Not planning on actually going in to the district that would be a bit too risky. Hell even Peeta traveling through a Halo wasn’t like him.
Making his way toward in the seam he could finally see the fence. A small dip entered his stomach making him feel queasy. Know what would happen if he ever got caught. Being whipped in the center square, death worse, getting his tongue cut out. Shaking the grim feeling off he just had to think about Katniss. She did this all the time going out in the forest not getting caught he could too. Granted he wasn’t as soft footed as Katniss nor was he as fast. But he did have the map that would lead him to the rabbit hole easily with out getting lost. Making it to the fence he stopped looking around causally being sure no one noticed him making his way here.
Slipping through the fence underneath he quickly made his way in to the forest. The foliage gave him a great cover even for his bulky body. Taking the map out he navigated his way to the Halo with out a hitch in the plan. He wondered how mad Katniss would be if she knew he went out here alone. Figuring he’d fill her in sometime probably not soon just so she’d be less angry. He didn’t need her hitting him again like last time it just brought back bad current memories. Although he was sure if she knew about his situation she wouldn’t again but that was something secret. Never to pass his lips even to a friend if he could call her that. More like an acquaintance or someone who just tolerates him. Holding his hand out in front of him it disappeared and he knew this was the jackpot. Thrusting the map back in to his pocket he held on to everything for dear life going through. It was quick and painless but his head was spinning once on the other side. Taking him a minute or two to free himself of the fog in his mind.
Swiftly walking he took in all the sites and sounds. This place was so different from District Twelve and the smells were awful that of something he couldn’t place. They had a meeting place Damien described to him. As Peeta eyes swept the place he just couldn’t seem to find it. Taking him a long while before actually seeing the distinct tree. Setting up he made sure he was well hidden even if there was a hovercraft above. He wondered how many times Damien came out here by himself. Setting his pack down he hid it under a small bush. If he did need to get out of there fast at least it would take them a bit to find it. So he waited looking around trying to see the district but there were to many trees in the way. “Ow!” Damien cursed up a blue streak as he felt the sharp pain blossom throughout his shoulder and felt the blood oozing down his arm. Damn this horse and its fiery nature! Ahh! He reached up with one hand to feel the bite wound on his shoulder and he grumbled under his breath while glaring at the stallion with one of those ‘if looks could kill…’ kind of looks. While a part of him was sad to see the horse go-as you got very attached to them after spending every day caring for them, feeding them, watering them, spending time with them and all--, a part of him was glad to see that the fiery stallion was getting sold to the Capitol. Let him be their problem for a change. Let him bite them for a change. It was safe to say that he was not amused at the present moment. Not amused in the slightest. He had other things to be getting to right now! He hadn’t forgotten about his meeting that he set up outside of the district boundaries with the blonde headed boy from District 12. Errr…Peeta. Peeta. His name was Peeta. Not some blonde headed kid. He had to remember this.
It had been a while since he had unceremoniously fallen into the ‘rabbit hole’ as it was and found himself in the proverbial wonderland that was another district. District 12 was unlike anything he had ever seen before. The smells, the sounds, the people--it was all so very different and to be blunt, it had been terrifying at first. Especially when the girl had shown up with her bow and arrows and yelling and all that crap--he had been sure that he was getting shot and killed. But after they all calmed down and introduced each other, he found out that they were like he was in a lot of ways.
While from two different districts that could have been different planets as far as he was concerned, they all three knew difficult times and were living in them right at this very moment. They were all poor as dirt (well he and Katniss compared to Peeta and them all compared to those in the capitol and district one and such), had to scrap to survive and he could appreciate those similarities because he had lived them. He knew exactly what that was like.
And so when he had left to make his way back to the portal he had come from, he couldn’t help but want to meet them again. He felt something from that meeting. Something like a—well almost like a kinship type of feeling. An acquaintanceship perhaps? Perhaps it could grow into something more, something bigger. He didn’t feel the same around them as he had around everyone else. It was different and well—he liked it to be honest.
’Hey Damien! Is the horses ready yet?!’
The tanned boy heard his father yelling out to him and he sighed, ”Almost dad! I need help with Apollo though!” he finally admitted defeat and asked for help. He needed it or else he was going to miss the meeting with Peeta. It was fifteen minutes later and Apollo and the rest of the horses were sold to the Capitol, they had their…money (insert snort here…it wasn’t enough to last a month with the 4 of them…) and his shoulder was adorned with a cream white cloth bandage to cover up the wound and keep it as clean as one could in this place.
Finally. He was free. Free to go. Him and his brother both. They had done their work, done their chores and their parents were satisfied and they could go out and do whatever. Damien made his way towards the boundary gates….being careful not to hit the panels that were live. There was one single panel that has a short in it and so it wasn’t brimming with electricity. It was just there, a dud and the peacekeepers had either been too lazy to see that it was broken or just didn’t report it yet. Either way—Damien wasn’t complaining. It was his ticket to the outside world after all.
The huge oak tree with bright green leaves, the bird’s nest on the third set of branches up from the ground, that spiraled up in a slight S shape and had plenty of nooks in the bottom where the roots had grown up and over the ground. It was the perfect place to meet with the other as far as he was concerned. They could hear anyone coming, hide from the Peacekeepers and had the perfect advantage if any animal tried to mess with them. He quickly saw the mess of blonde hair and the familiar build and he smiled softly…a nearly non visible quirk of a smirk that appeared at the corner of his mouth, ”Peeta. Hey there. Its nice to see you again.” he greeted as he moved no more…he didn’t want to surprise the other and then get a fist to the face…
No thank you…

Peeta walked around making sure to keep the tree in perfect sight. He was interested in the different shrubbery they had here in Ten. All of it seemed lusher and readily available. Not that Twelve was a desert wasteland or anything like that. But this place was just something different he had never laid his eyes on before. Then again they raised livestock here so it had to be different from the coalmines back home. The terrain outside of the District was a mountainous one due to they lived where the Appalachian Mountains had once been before the rebellion. He knew from school that they had mined there before. That’s why all the coal workers now how to go deeper into the mineshafts. Probably one of the reason’s when collapses did happen it was so tragic. Not even having time to move before everything caved in on them. They had tunneled so far in to the mountain he wondered if they would eventually come out on the other side.
There had been times he wanted to go down there. Just to know how hard the people of the Seam had to work every day. He was sure his job looked like a walk around the town square compared to theirs. It was terrible how people lived these days. Letting his mind run off in every direction about before. How free they must all have been, he didn’t have much to go on. Since the capitol kept the Districts pretty simple minded. Only teaching them basic math, reading and writing to be able to get by. Peeta could only dream about what luxuries people used to have. Of course there were stories handed down that they could go to college. And choose careers that catered to what people loved doing. Not ones they were sucked in to because that’s the only way they could get by. Knowing he would probably be a baker or even a painter who was known by everyone. It was a dream that one day his great grandchildren or some Mellark down the line could experience. What he would give for them to have a better life than him. Not saying his life was heinous in anyway shape or form compared to some. But to be able to be free and have no games hanging above your head would be marvelous.
Noticing he was wandering a bit far he made his short walk back. Not wanting to get eaten by a pack of… well he wasn’t sure what type of animals lived here. He could only guess they were different than the ones back home. Although he had never really encountered any of those either. Deciding he should pick up some sort of weapon he broke off a tree branch. It wasn’t much but enough to let him have time to get away if need be. Holding the branch in his hands he let his back rest against the large oak. It was now as he looked up he had time to actually check it out. Turning around he stood in awe not knowing how long the tree had been there. But from the looks of it, the plant seemed old. He knew if it could talk it could probably tell him about before the rebellion. It seemed to shoot sky high and he could probably never climb such and elegant looking thing. It seemed to twist this way and that as if something tried to stunt it’s growth but it didn’t obey. The ground around was covered in gnarled roots that suck up all over the place. This tree was a survivor just like the rest of the people who inhabited this area.
Hearing his name he slightly jumped holding the branch out. He didn’t swing it or anything but it was just his first line of defense. But registering what came after made him relax and throw his make shift weapon on the ground. “Damien, glad it was you or else I’m not sure what I would have done.” Laughing nervously running a hand through his all ready messed up blonde locks. Seeing the bandage on his arm he went in to full alert mode. Hoping that he didn’t get hurt from trying to sneak out or anything. “Are you okay?” Pointing to Damien’s arm before letting his hand rest back down at his side. He just wanted to check just to make sure everything was all right. If the kid were in pain he would usher him home like a parent. Of course Peeta would have that big brother stance because that’s just how he was. Kind to the core even if his mother greatly disapproved. Giving him another glance he then shifted back at bit. Reaching down under the plan he hid his knapsack under pulling it out. “I’ve brought snacks!” Puffing out his chest a little as if he had brought a five star meal. He obviously didn’t have that kind of money but he was proud of what he had brought. [/blockquote] Word Count: 840 Tags: Damien
