Damien look around with a heavy sigh that blew his bangs upwards a little before they feel back into his face. He wasn't amused here....but you could tell that already. just by looking at his face. He stood in the clearing...the eerily silent clearing where he couldn't here much of anything other then the rustling of leaves as the wind softly blew through them. He huffed softly. Where was he anyways? Well--he wasn't entirely a hundred percent sure of where he was....the place was so new and strange and unusual looking and all of that jazz...but he did know one thing. And one thing only. And that one thing was that he was not inside of District Ten anymore. Which could be considered both a very good thing and a very bad thing depending on which side of the coin you looked at here.
Good in that hey it was a new place. he could explore. That was always cool. And maybe find some new ways to feed his family---other then taking out tesserae that was (his name must have been in there a good dozen or so times by now--he mentally cringed). Sure he didn't know how to hunt per say (cause well it was illegal first off and secondly no one taught him how)--but he was sure with his knowledge of animals, he could learn. But ahh that was crazy. He would get his tongue cut out for that one. Or worse.
Ahh reasons all why it was always dangerous and never a good idea to be out here. He could get caught. And being outside of your district was severely punished. And some people he heard were mercilessly killed for being outside of their district boundaries. And so he had to get a move on. He had to be a somewhat more covered before the Capitol did their patrols. And then spotted him. And then he'd be in a word of trouble. Yeah that was not happening thank you He refused to let himself get caught. Let alone by peace keepers and the capitol.
Peacekeepers. Huh. If ever there were a group of people that pissed him off. It was the peace keepers. Actually it was the Capitolists...but the peace keepers came in a close second. They had spooked the horses. He had been there. They had all caused his sister's death. Nohemi. He swallowed heavily to get rid of the lump that had suddenly appeared in the back of his throat. No time to think about that. It was time to move on. To get out of here. Before he got seen and caught.
And then God only knew what would happen then. He could not--no would not let that happen. Yes it was best to go now...and go he did. He soon found himself in a thick forest....with plenty of places to hide. And now to figure out where he was? Hah the hardest part of this mess. Go him.

Peeta had made sure his family had evacuated his home before making a move. He even gave them a couple extra hours just to make sure. Peeking his head out of the door like he was some sort of criminal trying to not get caught. Grabbing his bag he slung it over his shoulder, it had some charcoal and pieces of paper. If Katniss and him were going to find more… well what ever they were, they needed maps. He wondered how many of the rabbit holes there were. Chuckling to him self as he made up a name for them. It was a safeish name he thought; no one would know what he was talking about if over heard. Making his way down the stairs he remained quiet even skipping over the stair that squeaked. It was around late morning- early afternoon. Katniss had said meet around noontime at the fence but he liked to get places early. It was probably because he was always in the bakery opening early, prepping things and such. Reaching the door he stopped a minute listening up. He could hear his parents bustling around the bakery. So he figured the coast was clear for him to get out of the house. Before he was wrangled in to staying and helping out.
Closing the door silently behind him he took off in a sprint. By no means did Peeta run so as he rounded the corner his breath was heavy. He was most certainly not built to run but he had no choice. Feeling like a spy he hummed a melody as he walked along. The town square was filled the brim with merchants. As if they had nothing better to do than laze around. He now knew why all the people from the seam thought Merchants were spoiled and lazy. Perhaps most of them were but Peeta’s family worked for their food day in and day out. There was never a day the bakery was closed even if majority of the family was sick. Always pulling together when it was most needed even if there were some complaints. Mostly from his older brother who had a life outside of the bakery unlike Peeta. Well until recently that is, most of his time before was spent on hours of making dough. Or decorating cakes, which was his favorite part of baking. Beside from actually handing the pastries over and seeing the bright smiling faces he handed them too. What could he say; he loved seeing people happy in the district since there wasn’t much happiness to go around.
As he entered the Seam he wondered where Katniss lived. Although he doubted she’d want him to come knocking on her door. It might ruin her reputation he thought bitterly but only for a second. He wasn’t one to be mean but she had a grudge against him he hadn’t even known about until recently. It was like he was living in a bubble this whole time until she popped it. He was going to prove him self to her that he wasn’t just a lazy merchant. That he could actually be reliable and not flaky like most people who were more fortunate. Peeta even proved him self all ready by talking to her in the first place. As shallow as that sounded most merchants would have given her a second look. No he was different from the others and always had been since he was a kid. His mother even hated him for it, yet that didn’t change him one bit.
Finally getting to the boundary line he stood there waiting for Katniss. He knew he was a bit early so settled him self down on a rock looking past the gates. It was risky even being this close if a peacekeeper past by. But he was a good boy and they’d probably let him off with a slap on the wrist. Gazing beyond the fence he thought he saw a shadow move. Standing up he blinked a couple times looking more closely. There was something out there but he couldn’t quite tell what it was, animal or beast? Looking back toward District Twelve he didn’t see Katniss at all and curiosity had taken him by surprise. Or quite more possibly wanting to impress Katniss got a hold of him. Slipping past the fence he look around again before heading in to the forest. Everything around him got thick fast it was quite intense. “Hello?” He called out but not too loud just in case it was a peacekeeper patrolling. They usually didn’t go by foot but hey they could have switched it up. “Anybody there?” Finally standing in place trying to listen to the sounds around him but he couldn’t separate sounds like Katniss. He wasn’t a hunter like she was, no he was a baker. [/blockquote] Word Count: 806 Tags: Damien, open

The more Damien looked around---the more he realized that this area he was in (wherever that may be) was actually kind of beautiful. The thick foliage and nature like sounds and clean smells were totally different then the heavily farmed areas he lived in. And different then the animal manure and musty smells he was used to either. It was so pretty. So nature like. So---natural. It was unlike anything he had ever really seen before. It was so...just so...real. So not fake. Unlike half of everything else in the districts. It was all so fake. Their purpose first off. I mean they all worked so hard as if everything was going to them when it really wasn't. It was only going to the capitol. And they got nothing. Or barely anything. And let's not even get him started on some of the people. Specially those of the higher districts. He had heard them before though just once or twice. They were faker then fake and it irritated the hell out of him.
He shook his head as he found himself getting angrier and angrier at the mere thoughts of it. It would do no good to get pissed off at it. There was nothing a lowly little district ten scrap like him could do about it. Well other then get his behind in a whole mess of trouble. But he wasn't exactly out to do that. No of course he wasn't. He wanted to stay very much alive thank you very much (heh until they probably reaped him that was). So all he could do was grumble and gripe and write about it in his journal which he kept in a hidden place not even his own family knew about. And boy was he going to have a lot to add to it today. If he could figure out where he was and get home that was.
It was the strangest thing ever. He had been wandering close to the fences---staring out at the land beyond the district. He knew he could never explore it. It was forbidden to go outside of the boundaries after all. But that didn't stop him from looking...and wanting...and wishing. But just as he wished he could get out...to be free (even for just a few hours)...to explore...he tripped over a rock near the fence line. But when he thought he would fall onto the hard ground---he had found himself in this place. It was unsettling to be in one place one moment and another the next. But hey---it was what it was. ..... He guessed.
He was thrown out of his thoughts when he heard a voice. He froze. Crap! He had been caught. He heard the voice again...calling out to him. Wondering if he was out there. Damien huffed softly. He wasn't an idiot. He wasn't going to fall for it that easily. God! He scurried forward and stopped as he found a small tree branch. Perfect. Big enough to be threatening and yet small enough for him to hold. He quickly picked the smaller limbs and leaves off of the bigger piece before he hid behind the large oak in wait for the fool who thought that he could catch the farmer boy by surprise.
Then he saw the stocky blonde appear and Damien growled lowly as he leaped out of his hiding place right a the other passed so that he was behind the other, "State your name stranger." he spat out in a demanding tone as he glared at the other and poked him in the back with his makeshift weapon. The before I might stab you part went unspoken though he supposed the other might have gathered that by the way his muscles were tense, form was straight and the way he brandished that tree limb like it was a weapon. Damien had no intentions of being caught by anyone....and this blonde was no exception. He had no right to spy on him. And follow him. And Damien was not amused.
Damien jaw clenched as he took a threatening step forward. The other had better start talking and soon. Otherwise there was going to be trouble....

Walking around a bit he knew it was stupid to go out in to the forest. Especially with out someone who knew the forest well. He had only been out here last time with Katniss and was now trying to be a hero. Rolling his eyes at him self he made a circle in hopes that he’d find the fence. Keeping his eyes peeled as best he could he didn’t see anyone. Maybe it was just a deer passing by and yelling just scared it off? Shrugging it off that it was just an animal he let his guard down. It was a rookie mistake; then again in this situation he was a rookie. Battling his way through the thick forest he swore he was almost out of there. Until another turn seemed to take him only deeper. He wondered how Katniss navigated through his hell with out getting lost. Looking up at a tree he could try and shimmy up it. In all honesty he knew he was too heavy to climb a tree high enough to see the district. Sighing in disbelief that he had now gotten him self in trouble. All because he saw a shadow in the forest and wanted to investigate.
Seeing a large tree could have been an oak but Peeta was no expert. He rounded it only to hear a voice behind him. Turning around he looked confused first was that he didn't hear the boy sneaking up and secondly why the boy was carrying tree branch. Figuring that he was supposed to intimidate Peeta. To a point it did yet he was much bigger than the boy but wanted no trouble. The boy then told him to state his name. Shouldn’t it have been the other way around and why hadn’t he seen this boy in the District before? It was all confusing and messed up so Peeta played along not wanting to scare this kid any farther. It was then the boy poked him which made Peeta say, “Ouch! Stop poking me with that branch. I’m not here to hurt you….” Peeta wrinkled his nose rubbing the spot the boy jabbed. Holding up his hands as if saying I’m not here to get you in trouble. Honestly this is what Peeta got for trying to be brave, a stab in the back, literally. Looking around he hoped Katniss would show up with her bow and arrow so this kid would back down. For now Peeta would just have to use his sharp tongue to get the job done.
“My name is Peeta Mellark from District Twelve as you probably all ready know. Why are you out here in the forest? You know you could get in trouble just by stepping foot out here.” It was a laugh because Peeta was out here too. He knew the risks but this kid seemed a bit confused. He wondered if he wasn’t quite right and should just run for his life now. Raising a brow he looked the kid over even his clothes were funny. Not the typical Seam or Merchants clothing. So where did this kid come from then? Then the thought hit him square between the eyes of course the rabbit holes! That would explain everything down to the kid confused face and clothes. “Listen, uh what’s you name?” Shaking his head he continued with his small realization. “Did you just suddenly find yourself here?” If the kid would only answer his questions Peeta could help the kid out. Some how he didn’t think it was going to work out that way but there was a small hope on Peeta’s face. [/blockquote] Word Count: 608 Tags: Damien, open

Damien's glare turned into a rather interesting looking look as the other spoke. Half confused...half glaring and half suspicious. All at the same time. He was sure it looked rather entertaining even if he was far from entertained. Who was the guy? Now that he looked at him more closely...he realized he had never seen this guy before. Which was strange in and of itself. Usually with the poorer districts--it was as if everyone knew everyone else. And everything about them. And so Damien was sure he would have seen the blonde before had they been from the same district. And yet he hadn't. Not to mention his clothes. They weren't the clothes of a farmer. No...they were very different then the rugged, sun bleached and worn clothes of someone from his district. It was almost as if the other spent a lot of time indoors. The clothes didn't seem very color faded. Hmmm.... This only served to heighten his uncertainty of the other. Just who was this guy?
The what ifs then began going through his head like wildfire. What if this was a spy? What if he turned him in? What if they got caught out here? What if the other just tried to attack him in the here and the now? The other was bigger then he was. Damien as cocky as he tried to be--knew he stood little chance of winning a one on one fight with the other. What would happen if he died here? Then his family would be lost. They'd totally be lost without him. So many questions and no answers. Damien shook his head. Huh story of his life. But now that Damien thought about for a few moments -- while the other was larger and more stocky them him... Damien was certainly a lot more agile and quicker. He was confident in his ability to outrun the other should this go South.
The other's name however and where he was from was what really struck him. What really shocked him. And what really drove the stake in as it were. His name was Peeta? He was from District 12? Holy crap he was a far way away from home! Damien instantly straightened his body, relaxed his muscles and threw away his home made weapon. He had no need for it here. The other was from District 12. One of the few places that were poorer then he was. And if anyone hated the capitol more then he did--it was them. Damien knew this kid wouldn't be a spy. There was no way in hell. And so he was safe. Least he was sure he was. For now anyways. Still he could out run him...okay so he held way too much confidence in his legs. He really did.
As the other mentioned getting into trouble, Damien let out a bitter bark of a laugh, "You and me both Peeta. You can't tell you that you wouldn't get into trouble either if you got caught out here." he chided as he rolled his eyes. The other wasn't pulling any of that crap over on him. Damien wasn't easily fooled. He was a bit too smart for that one. The other had another thing coming if he thought he could easily fool him.
"Name's Damien." he said as the other asked though he gave no last name. he never gave his last name to anyone. It'd be too easy for them to let slip...then people who know who he was, his entire name....and all that crap and he believed the more obscure you were around here, the better. The less others knew about you, then the safer you were in the end. Damien merely shrugged as the other asked if he had suddenly appeared here, "Suppose so. Might even say I fell down the proverbial 'gopher hole'." he said using the obligatory air quotes.
God he hated gophers. Things were such pests back in District Ten. Always making holes. And making the horses tumbles and the cows trips. And getting rid of them was a pain in the neck!
Okay moving on now! there were more important things to think about right now!

Peeta kept his tense stance as the kid still held his weapon. He told him his name and what district he was in hoping to calm the kid down. Then again if he had fell through one of those portals with out Katniss and someone approached him he would have done the same thing. Well maybe he would have used his words more but he would have found a weapon of some sort. How did the capitol keep these a secret for so long? It made everything clearer in Peeta’s mind. How the peacekeepers traveled around or if a district did have an up rise how so many soldiers got there so quickly. Questions were just piling on and he had no answers with no one to ask. It seemed the Capitol was one step a head as always only this time the people of the district were now in on the secret. He knew how much trouble he would get in if anyone found out. They would probably kill him in an instant if any of this came out. Glancing at the kid he hoped that he knew to keep his mouth shut. But that was no doubt said with out even having to be verbalized if he was smart enough. Looking him over he seemed to know what was best to keep him self alive.
Relief seemed to wash over the kids face as he sorted out Peeta was telling the truth. His weapon was thrown to the wayside and made Peeta feel better about the situation. He brought his hands down to his sides but still in view. To show that he wasn’t going to do anything funny they were now on even terms. Really they weren’t, if the kid was going to attack him with out a weapon it wouldn’t be pretty. Peeta was a big guy as much as he hated to brag and could take him down. But the kid in front of him was smaller and could probably run faster. Not built with that kind of agility he was too heavy set and broad shouldered. It seemed like a fight wasn’t necessary whatever district this kid was from it seemed they both knew hardships. Possibly this kid knew more than Peeta looking sun kissed he figured he worked outside. Peeta would never know that kind of labor having the bakery but if that were ever taken away he’d be forced to figure it out. Although that would never happen there baked goods were profitable, always would be. Baking was the best skill he could ever have for living. If he was ever thrown in to the games he doubted he would be able to bake his way out of it.
The bitter laugh caught him off guard a bit. Then again this kid spoke the truth they would both be in trouble of a peacekeeper walked by. It was punishable by law if they were out of the boundaries. There districts being safe even though that was just a ruse. Even in the Districts if you stepped a foot out of line you could still be punished. Usually out in the town square in front of family, friends and people you didn’t know. All gathered around the watch the peacekeepers throw you around like a doll before killing you. “Your right, both our heads would be served on a platter to the President. It won’t come to that, I swear. The peacekeepers in this district are lazy and stupid. They would even dream of us being out here on the outskirts.” Peeta wasn’t one hundred percent sure that the peacekeepers wouldn’t come out here. He had only been here once with Katniss but from the way she moved around out here. It seemed that she wasn’t too alert someone was going to find her. Then again she was a lot quieter than Peeta. Being light on her feet unlike him, every branch he came in counter with he cracked. Not on purpose but before now he never had a reason to learn how to be quiet.
“Nice to meet you Damien, what district do you come from?” It was crucial for Peeta to know since they wanted to map out the portals and where they led too. He could be a perfect piece to the puzzle that was slowly coming together. They still had a lot to learn about them but everything counted at this point. He noted that Damien didn’t give his last name probably a defense mechanism. Or perhaps so Peeta couldn’t track him like he’d know how to do that anyway. Damien was a bit to paranoid for Peeta to handle then again maybe Peeta was to relaxed with everything. He was an honest kid and planned to stay that way even if it led to his demise. His thoughts were jogged back in to reality as Damien began talking again about how he got here. “I thought so, these portals seem to be everywhere. I wonder how no one stumbled on to them before. Or if they did aren’t alive to talk about it.” His face going a bit paler as he thought about it. What did that mean for them? Did the capitol know when one had been used and by who? His mind went on a twenty questions game with no one to play back with. [/blockquote] Word Count: 899 Tags: Damien, Open

Post by Katniss the Mockingjay on Jan 11, 2013 12:30:00 GMT -5
Katniss felt queasy as she went through the portal. She never did like going through them and would avoid them - if they weren't so exciting and fun to use. And if someone hadn't gone off without her. She had seen him in the distance, and then he just left! Was he spooked by something, or was this some sick, twisted game of tag he expected her to play? Whatever it was, he had no excuse to go without her. Damn merchants. Damn you, Peeta!
[/i] She shouted in her head, I said together! She let out a moan and a deep breath, closing her eyes in hopes that the ride would be over soon. Even though the portals were nearly instantaneous, the few seconds of traveling felt like torture to Katniss no matter how many times she went through it. She clutched her bow in her right hand and the strap of her quiver in the other. Peeta didn't even bother going through the portal with a weapon or, or, or a really big stick! She cursed under her breath. She'd have to save him, wouldn't she. She would be saving him time and time again. The thought brought a snort through her nose, but also, very faintly, a smile onto her lips. She shook her head and let out a breath, still unable to rid herself of the small smile that made its home on her face. Damn you, Peeta...Katniss cringed as she landed once more, face down on the ground. She'd only managed to land on her feet a couple times, a feat that she was determined to make a regular occurrence if she kept traveling through the holes. Katniss scrambled to her feet, clinging onto her bow with one hand and lightly brushing dirt off of her fathers leather jacket with the other. She took in a deep breath and looked around her. The forest was as lush as the one that she left. The only reason she knew she wasn't around Twelve anymore was because she couldn't see their fence along the distance. Where was she? And most importantly, where was Peeta? She drew an arrow from her quiver and set it against her bow, ready to draw it back and fire if anything or anyone opposed her. Maybe she was being paranoid, but then again, maybe she wasn't. She could have been in One for all she knew, or even The Capitol Outskirts which would make both her and Bread Boy sitting ducks. Future Avox's. Or dead. Katniss took in a deep breath. No, she had to stay calm. What else did she have? Turn back and leave him alone, or risk her life, his family's life, her family's life and keep going in hopes she'd find him like a needle in this haystack of a forest. Needle. Haystack. He needs me. Katniss reasoned with herself, That dumbass.[/i] She looked all around her, taking a few steps in each direction. It was impossible to find his footsteps in such a dense wood, and Katniss was quickly becoming frustrated. Every second counted. What if he was being attacked by a bear or foraging for poisonous berries? Ugh. Katniss nearly kicked herself as she took off sprinting in one direction, hoping that Peeta followed the sun into what was most likely some form of clearing. If they made it back in one piece, she would drill him with her knowledge of forest life. Mushrooms, berries, flowers, and to have a contingency plan in case they got separated like this. The plan being WAIT FOR KATNISS. It wasn't long before she finally spotted blonde hair through the dense forest. Her strides became longer and quicker until she caught up to him, nearly tackling him in relief. The smile on her face was unbelievably wide now. She held him for a few moments before pulling away and urgently checking him over for wounds. "Oh my god, Peeta! Are you okay?" She breathed, feeling another wave of relief wash over her when she realized he was okay. And then, all of a sudden, she raised her hand and smacked his shoulder, hard. "YOU. I TOLD YOU TO WAIT. DON'T YOU SCARE ME LIKE THAT AGAI-"It was from the corner of her eye that she realized they weren't alone. Katniss gripped her bow and arrow tightly, but left it pointed towards the ground. He didn't seem threatening, but she wanted to be ready in case he was. Always have a contingency plan. She bit her lip and let out a short breath, calling out to the boy. "H-hello?"[/div][/blockquote]

Part of Peeta wanted to bring this boy back to his district. But with the clothes he was sporting he’d stick out like a red thumb. He wasn’t really good at plans it wasn’t his thing. No his charm was sweet talking people or just making them feel comfortable. He knew it worked cause Damien had put down his weapon. Or maybe it was because this was District Twelve the poorest district. It gave them a sense of security. As if they were some how from two different worlds but the same one at the same time. It most certainly would have been a different reaction if this were a District One kid. They’d probably be battling it out now Peeta would be in flight response trying to save his own neck. But all that didn’t matter now it was here nor there so it wasn’t a problem. Looking around once more he had no idea where he was. They both were sitting targets if peacekeepers decided to do a sweep. Well maybe not Damien he seemed to be able to hold his own.
Swearing he heard something his head jerked but it disappeared. Maybe something was hunting them and it wasn’t a human. This made him get a bit nervous he had no way to defend himself. He was a merchant kid after all never really exploring the woods like some in his district. Honestly he had no reason too, being better fed than most. There was no reason for him to pick up another skill other than baking and frosting. Of course the occasional painting but he wouldn’t be able to paint him self out of this picture if it got gruesome. Turning his head back toward Damien he looked around trying to spot the portal he flew out of. “Do you know how to get back?” This was really the only plan he could thing of. Shove the kid back in to his district and try to find his own way back. He knew it might take a while but he’d eventually do it. Moving on unruly lock of ash blond hair out of his face it fought with him. Only making matter worse although he tried to look calm on the outside. Masking his feeling was never something he mastered but tried his best.
Then he really did hear something but it was too late. What ever it was had tackled him and nearly knocked him over. Trying to grab at it his wild blue eyes saw a familiar face. His tense body slowly stopped trying to fight as Katniss held him close before pulling away. Circling him like a hungry dog trying to find the best way to attack. He wanted to reach out and grab her before she went in to hyperventilation mode but couldn’t seem to get her. She was too quick on her feet for him leaving a very dizzy Peeta in the process. Finally he stopped turning around before her words invaded his mind. “I’m fine Katniss.” He said raising a brow. He had never seen this kind of reaction toward him before from her. Almost scaring him how fierce she could be. Then before he had time to react her voice got loud and she smacked him. Flinching away she probably didn’t notice as she went on her tirade. “Katniss, Kaaaatttniiissss!” He tried to get her attention but it was no use. She was in some other world of him disappearing probably dead forever.
When she stopped he knew she noticed the boy standing there. This is why he was trying to get her attention. If Peeta didn’t threaten him Katniss surely would send up signal flares to him now. Eyeing her bow he didn’t want her to do anything stupid. Watching her hands grip the bow they were almost white not sure if he was hostile or not. “Stop acting like he’s from the Capitol.” Peeta cut in to her with his words. Stepping forward putting a hand on her shoulder. “He doesn’t mean any harm, he walked through one of those portals. Obviously there are more of them on other outskirts of the districts.” None of this was reassuring to Peeta. Knowing more about the portals were dangerous. For all of them now and they were in the same boat whether they liked it or not. “Damien this is Katniss and Katniss meet Damien. And play nice maybe putting your bow away?” He tried to prod but knew it was ultimately up to her. [/blockquote]

Damien felt every ounce of his paranoia (he called it cautiousness thank you very much) was justified. He wasn't sure what was going on here. And he didn't like it. He didn't like it one tiny bit. He had been minding his own damn business when he had been thrown into this pile of unknowns. Who was this? Well I supposed he already figured that one out. Why did he want to know where he was from? What did it matter to him? Why did he care? The other seemed far too nice for his own good, but Damien wasn't about to say that to his face. He was no idiot after all. He knew what to say and what not to say if he wanted to stay alive thank you. He wasn't going to be yakking about this to anyone anytime soon. Maybe around the twelfth of never...ahaha see the joke there. Hah it wasn't very good he knew. Heck even in his mind it was a terrible joke. Har har.
Anyways...
But he supposed there would have been nothing too terribly wrong about telling him where he lived. Not like he'd ever get there. Or even if he did--what were the chances of him remembering someone like him? I mean really. Odds are he would forget if he ever got to his district. Not like that would be happening any time soon. "Ten." he said as the other wondered where he was from. The farming district. It was a lot of work indeed. And most of it went to the capitol (a fact that made him bitter, jaded and annoyed him to no end--but when was that news to anyone?). It wasn't an easy lifestyle and one might say it hardened him---but then again that wasn't news to anyone either was it?
It was when the other asked if he knew how to get back to where he had come through that portal that Damien realized he could be in a lot of trouble here. He was supposed to know that? He wasn't even sure what portals they were talking about?! How was he going to get home? To his family? And before the peace keepers found him? If he was gone too long, they'd find him out for sure. Damien's face paled as he tried to gather his composure and stop his thoughts from becoming a train wreck inside of his mind. It took a moment before he spoke, "I---don't know. I didn't know how I got here. I didn't know I was supposed to be paying attention!" he spat out, suddenly very anxious ridden and worried about the idea of being out here for the night...or the week...or forever. Ugh....the very idea made him turn green around the gills (but he kept his lunch inside of his stomach thank you very much).
His ears pricked and he was thrown out of his thoughts as he had heard something from the forests around them. Was it peace keepers? ... Nah he was being silly there. They patrolled from the air...not by foot. Maybe it was a predator...out on the hunt and they were the prey. He took a few steps back, his feet hitting the branch he had tossed to the side and he suddenly felt a lot more secure then he had five seconds ago. He could easily and quickly pick his weapon and defend himself if he needed to. He was ready. Totally ready.
Or maybe not.
The girl came flying in from nowhere and Damien jumped back...flinching as she began to yell out (not sure who she was actually yelling at...him or the other). But he soon found out. He watched as she chided the other for scaring her and hugged him. His head tilted to the side as she spoke. They were friends... that was obvious. And maybe he should just leave now. He was the odd man out. The third wheel as it were and he felt horrendously awkward. And yeah leaving actually sounding like a marvelous idea right about now...
but not so fast there Damien....
The little relaxation he did have in his body, fled like a prey animal being hunted as she spoke to him (his muscles tensing, his jaw clenched and his whole body posture screamed of nervousness and anxiety) and he saw the bow and arrow at her side and it only got worse. What color was in his face fled as well as he came face to face with the prospects of getting shot with an arrow. He gulped softly. She had a weapon. And an ally. He had nothing. He had no ally to help him in a fight. No weapon to fight back with. Oh god he was sunk. He was totally sunk.
Anything Peeta was saying to him, to her, or to them both wasn't even registering in his mind. All he knew was that he was in trouble and he totally should have stayed in his house and not gotten out of bed today.
His feet once again bumped against the branch made into weapon and he bent down to pick it up...but froze as he touched it, looking up at the other two, obviously nervous and anxious and yes even scared....scared of their ally---ness....of the weapon....of well...everything right now!!!
I mean could you really blame him?
